Week 3 Blog EDUC 5243

 Part 1-

Based on the Triple E framework and the research I examined, there are some key considerations I would take into account as I build an asynchronous professional learning course for my peers. To structure this course, I will design online modules that guide teachers through meeting the SMART goal of incorporating technology-enhanced lessons into their teaching by using the Triple E Framework rubric.  Also, after reading the article, Integrating the Experiential Learning Cycle with Educational Supervision by Gordon, I will ensure that Kolb’s experiential learning cycle is incorporated into my LMS modules to ensure the attainment of the goal.

When constructing my asynchronous professional learning course for my peers, I will need to be sure to include the following modules-

  1. What is the Triple E Framework, and why is it beneficial?

  2. Explain Kolb’s experiential learning cycle and how to use it.

  3. Provide a list of available technology that can be used to meet the goal.

I will also need to ensure that my LMS is user-friendly for teachers who are not technologically advanced and that I am cognizant of the time they have to spend on this course.

Part 2-

The Cognitive Coaching approach to support teacher technology use within the framework would seamlessly integrate into my coaching goals. The Cognitive Coaching approach and Kolb’s experiential learning cycle are very similar. While they have different structures and methodologies, they both emphasize learning through self-reflection of practices and refining those self-reflections to create more engaging lessons. Both approaches allow for an authentic learning and personalized learning atmosphere where teachers feel comfortable and are not judged to make decisions based on their students and their outcomes. Utilizing the Cognitive Coach approach in my coach cycle will also make teachers more aware of their current technology integrations' effectiveness and how they can improve their integrations to include more of the ISTE standards.

The biggest takeaway from the Cognitive Coach reading that I could use in the LMS course to create meaningful learning opportunities is that this model is used to help aid in the improvement of teaching practices in a criteria-based, non-judgemental manner. I know my curriculum coach has stepped in and offered to help with certain tasks or lessons, but it is not always well received due to the dialogue or the manner in which it is presented. Using the Cognitive Coach approach can eliminate negative feelings toward the coaching model by providing teachers with a model that promotes personal growth by collaborating with a coach to reflect, revise, and refine teaching practices and providing them with the tools to show continuous growth through self-reflection. This approach will also be helpful to use with 1:1 or small group coaching to help structure meaningful and reflective conversations and get personalized feedback based on your own reflections.

Part 3-

The ISTE Coaching standards addressed are 4.1. a Create a Shared Vision, 4.1.c Cultivate a Supportive Coaching Culture, 4.2.a Deepen Expertise Through Professional Learning, 4.2.c Commit to Continuous Improvement. When using the Triple E Framework with aspects of the experimental learning cycle and Cognitive Coaching approach, teachers and coaches will create a shared vision of professional development through the use of technology that promotes continuous professional growth.

The ISTE Essential Conditions also support my work by supporting the same learning goal I have for my LMS course. The Essential Conditions, coupled with the Triple E Framework rubric, enable teachers to choose high-quality educational technology that helps support and promote student learning and success.

  1. Danna,
I enjoyed reading your post. I found it informative and effective. I also used Triple E because it's easy to both understand and implement. I like how you pointed out the similarities between Triple E and the Cognitive Coaching when you said, "While they have different structures and methodologies, they both emphasize learning through self-reflection of practices and refining those self-reflections to create more engaging lessons." When we can help teachers create their own goals and see how they can grow, professional development is highly beneficial.

  2. Danna,
You have a great plan in place. I am also using Triple E. I was wondering, are you planning to go over the ISTE standards in your Professional Development Course? I was not familiar with them until I started taking classes over Educational Technology, so I was curious if that is a direction you plan to go.

  3. Great job! Your plan is very easy to read and understand. I also used he Triple E Framework. In my opinion it was the best fit to go along with the ISTE Standards.

  4. Hello Danna. You did a good job of making the connection between Cognitive Coaching and Kolb’s experiential learning cycle. I think both approaches focus on self-reflection and continuous improvement, which are both key elements to helping teachers grow in their use of technology. Creating a safe and supportive learning environment allows teachers to feel confident in exploring new strategies and integrating more of the ISTE standards into their lessons. I also think that using Cognitive Coaching will help make teachers more aware of their current practices. Also, this ill encourage them to think about how they can make their lessons even more engaging. Your approach will be sure to lead teachers toward more meaningful change in the classroom.
