Week 3 Blog Assignment

 In chapter four, Processes that Support Learning, in the book How People Learn II: Learners, Contexts, and Cultures, the authors analyze the key concepts that facilitate learning. There are three main aspects: executive functioning, self-regulation, and memory. The accompanying graphic illustrates this idea and expresses how all three are critical components in the learning process. Also outlined in the graphic is the connection between Gura's idea about the critical need to foster a creative learning environment and the educational tools and practices by Rivero that support creativity in Chapter 4 from How People Learn II: Learners, Contexts, and Cultures, Processes that Support Learning. Additionally, the graphic outlines the International Society for Technology in Education, ISTE, standard Facilitator 2.6a-foster, which is a culture where students take ownership of their learning goals and outcomes in both independent and group settings. This standard best supports the ideas of self-directed learning, innovation, and metacognition in the text.

    Danna, It is so important for students to take ownership of their learning. Your focus on student self-control, regulation, and autonomy results in independent students who take power over their education.

1.   I have made significant progress in my digital story. My script is completed. When I read and shared my script, I ensured it followed a logical plot progression that engaged the reader.        Technology in my school and district is abundant and can be found everywhere. The latest and greatest new gadget, device, or learning platform- we have it. Teachers and staff at my school have no shortage of technology. However, time constraints, inadequate training, and a lack of professional development often deter educators from implementing all of the new technologies into their classrooms. And often, when teachers do find the time to try and include new digital tools in their classrooms, it ends in frustration and confusion due to not having the proper digital skills and competencies to effectively integrate technology into their daily lessons.  When developing a plan to bridge this gap, we can not continue to provide the traditional approach of only developing technical skills with isolated professional development (Falloon, 2020).        The community members in my context would be the teachers and staff at my school. When evaluating the digital design divide among them, a few key dividing factors come to mind.  Geography plays a large part in the digital divide within my community. Since 2013, my city and school district has doubled in size. What was once a small rural town where everyone gathered at the Friday night football games to cheer on their home team is now a massive school district boasting eight elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school that is bursting at the seams. The large population has made it difficult for the school district and town to keep growing hand in hand. While many people still want the community to remain a small-town vibe, that is no longer the reality of the community.
