Week 1 Blog Assignment

Hello! My name is Danna Dougan. I live in Texas with my husband and our four dogs. In my free time, I like to try new recipes, read romances and thriller novels, thrift, and travel. I have taught many grade levels throughout my 14 years of teaching. I am currently teaching 9th-grade English and Humanities. This is my first class toward getting my Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Educational Technology.  In taking this class, I hope that I can learn how to enhance my teaching skills with the implementation of meaningful technology and improve student engagement. My goal for the future is to be a curriculum coach or director to help support teachers in creating purposeful and engaging lessons for all of their students.

The ISTE standard, Knowledge Constructor Indicator 3a, Effective Research Strategies, asks students to plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their intellectual or creative pursuits. In conjunction with the ISTE standard, teachers in a 9th-grade English classroom are expected to address the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills standard, E1.11, in which students demonstrate and use research skills to plan and present in written, oral, or multimodal formats.

To begin the research lesson, together as a class we would complete the research process. I would ensure to demonstrate and model effective researching, planning, and presenting skills so the students can emulate the process with a partner or independently. Once we have completed the process together and the students have demonstrated an understanding of the task the students would then begin the research process in small groups or independently. Students would begin with brainstorming and sharing relevant and interesting topics of potential research on Jamboard. Next, students could plan and organize their research with a graphic organizer in Google Docs. Once topics and planning are established, students could use relevant and reliable websites such as Google Scholar and Britannica to conduct their research. To demonstrate their knowledge of the research and inquiry process students can choose to use multiple ways to present their information including Google Slides, Canva, or YouTube.

When using the three E model in lessons, the teacher can ensure that multiple diverse learners' needs are met and the appropriate scaffolding and extension are available to master a topic or skill.  When creating this lesson the three E model reminded me of best practices for a lesson such as modeling, I do, we, do, you do, graphic organizers, and engaging in authentic discourse while using technological tools to ensure that students can complete the task independently and effectively in the future.

  1. Hi, Danna, This is also my first class pursuing my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction. Good luck to you! I love how you included many different types of technology so your students could have many choices in their research projects. I also love that you plan to thoroughly model the process for your students before they dive into their own research. Best of luck!

  2. Hello Danna! I think your lesson seems very well thought out and I love how you are modeling the research process for the students. I like that you are giving the students options when presenting their information. Some of the students may feel more comfortable with certain technology and I think that by allowing them the option to choose which platform they use, they will be able to present their information in the best way possible!

  3. Hi Dana! I like the way various technology tools and resources are thoughtfully incorporated throughout this project. Unfortunately, Google Jamboard is going away at the end of 2024. I'd like to suggest Padlet as a possible replacement for that tool in this assignment. It's such a great site for collaboration and sharing ideas.

  4. Hello, Danna. I am just starting the C & I program also. Good luck to you!

My favorite part of your lesson is your use of JamBoard. Sometimes students get stuck in the brainstorming phase and then feel very self-conscious because other kids are moving on quickly. This use of technology adds collaboration at a critical thinking stage of the research process that teachers sometimes run through too quickly. What a great idea!

  5. Hi Danna,
I just realized that we both teach 9th-grade ELA and Humanities. It is interesting to compare Texas's state standards with Oklahoma's standards. Good luck on your graduate school journey.
